Musicians during COVID-19: Josh Roberts
Josh Roberts shares his experiences as a musician during the COVID-19 lockdown in NYC, discussing the challenges faced and how he found inspiration amidst the pandemic.
When the COVID-19 lockdown began, musicians and bands worldwide faced significant challenges. Josh Roberts shared his experience as a musician during the lockdown in NYC and how his positivity helped him navigate these tough times.
1. What was the initial effect of COVID-19 on you?
"Initially, I had three tours canceled—two national and one international. I've also heard similar news regarding next year's international tour. Additionally, I had to cancel some freelance work, and my off-Broadway contract was postponed for the foreseeable future."
2. How did you see the music industry adapt to the pandemic?
"At first, it seemed like most people did nothing, just waiting for the situation to improve. Eventually, people began streaming and teaching more online. There was also a mass exodus from NYC, resulting in over 13,000 empty apartments. My church gig transitioned to live streaming and recording, allowing me to keep that going."
3. Have you been inspired, or has your creativity been harmed by COVID-19?
"In the beginning, I felt very inspired, but then I experienced a dip in motivation. I realized the pandemic would last a while, which led to a more melancholy phase. Now, I feel I'm rising again as things open up and people return to the city."
4. What are some ways for normal crowds to support a musician during COVID-19?
As much as tuning into a live stream shows support, Josh Roberts recommends also supporting musicians outdoors safely. This encourages live venues to invite musicians to perform again.
"Also, vote—especially here in the US—for representatives who value the lives of lower-income artists and creatives and who will implement programs to help us."
