Concert halls are filling up, aux cables are unwound, and you’ve taken out your hard case to prepare for your first gig of the year. If you’ve forgotten how to get ready for live music and gigs, we’re here to help.
1. Polish your own performance
Listen to the songs you will be performing on repeat. Pay attention to the main melody line and hum along. After you’ve memorized the dynamics, build up and quiet down, and the general melody of the song, focus on your parts. Note which sections you struggle with and practice those until you perfect them.
2. Practice with your band
If you haven’t already, decide who will lead each song during your live performances. If there are multiple guitarists, determine who will handle the rhythm parts and who will take on melody and ad-libs. Ensure that everyone knows their roles for each song before rehearsals begin. Band rehearsals should not be about learning the songs or playing them correctly.
3. Get your gear ready
It’s likely been a while since your last show. If you haven’t performed maintenance on your instrument since the start of the pandemic, now is the time. Whether it’s restringing your guitar or getting new drum heads, ensure your gear is in perfect condition for your performance. The last thing you want is to start your set with a broken instrument.
4. Stage performance
In addition to perfecting the sound of the band, your rehearsals should also focus on your stage performance. Practice your lines for the audience and pay attention to your body language and eye contact. Consider your positioning—if you’re standing or sitting, where will you face? If you move around, where will you walk, and which band members will you interact with?
5. Have a checklist and schedule
Jitters can arise the day before or on the day of your performance. Make sure you have a checklist of the gear you need to bring, and pack it all in one case or bag. Do you need extra strings? Your Soundbrenner Core 2? A laptop and charger for your DAW system? Create a schedule and agree on timing with your bandmates.
Ensure you have ample time before soundcheck to calm your nerves and prep with the team.
6. Enjoy
When things go wrong during live performances, just have fun. You’ve done your best to prepare, and worrying too much won’t help.
