Warm-up and prepare

Warming up before practicing is essential. It reinforces muscle memory, making your fingers or vocal cords more comfortable when you start playing. Additionally, it helps prevent injuries, especially before an intensive practice session.

You can easily find warm-up exercises online to trigger your muscle memory. Practice melodic patterns, long and short phrases, and varying tempos.

Here is an example:

To warm up, start playing scales at different tempos: 80 BPM, 90 BPM, 100 BPM, 110 BPM, and 120 BPM. Here’s how to set this up with the Soundbrenner Core 2:

Set a standard 4/4 time signature and set the BPM to 80. Save this rhythm to your setlist.

Repeat this step with 90, 100, 110, and 120 BPM.

Practice your scales with this setlist, running through each tempo twice or until you feel comfortable playing smoothly.

Enhance your warm-up by playing your scales in both legato and staccato. Legato produces a fluid, continuous sound between notes, while staccato features notes that are sharply detached. The sound may vary by instrument due to timbre, tuning, and range. Here is a perfect differentiation between the two sounds with the piano.

If you play a string instrument, ensure it is tuned using the Soundbrenner Core 2’s handy contact tuner feature. Simply detach the Core 2 from its rig, attach it to your instrument, and start tuning. How convenient!

Tracking your practice

Charting your improvement is crucial. If you struggle with your G major scale at 120 BPM, it's perfectly fine to practice at a slower BPM. With time, you'll be able to play your scales or riffs at 120 BPM.

Practicing your piece with a metronome

When learning a new piece, we often overlook the tempo and time signature. However, these elements are vital for establishing the song's direction and mood. You can watch this video by David Bennett Piano for real examples of how tempo changes affect a song. A stable tempo and correctly placed accents are essential for shaping the song.

Practicing with a metronome

Most pieces will indicate the BPM at the top. Depending on your preference, you can adjust it slightly to find what feels smooth and right for you.

Once you determine your target tempo, say 136 BPM, start practicing at half that BPM to ensure you hit the right notes with proper technique.

Begin at 68 BPM (half of 136), then progress to 102 BPM (three-quarters of the speed), and finally reach 136 BPM. This gradual approach helps you understand finger techniques and challenges your muscle memory.

With the Soundbrenner Core 2, you can easily adjust the tempo by turning the wheel. You can also set accents to indicate when to emphasize certain notes.

Solidify your rhythm

If you are practicing a song typically played with a band, you can find a drum loop online that matches your practice tempo. Tap the beat on your watch as you play along with the drum loop.

If you are practicing with a band and they also have a Soundbrenner Pulse or Core 2 device, you can easily sync all your devices for a collaborative practice session! Here’s how.

These are just a few tips for practicing with your Soundbrenner Core 2. We hope this enhances your practice experience, making it more effective and enjoyable.
