How do discounts work with gift cards?

When redeeming a gift card, a discount code can also be applied at the same time. The discount is deducted first, and the remaining balance is covered by the gift card. For this reason, discounts cannot be applied to the purchase of a gift card, as it would result in the discount being applied twice.
