The impact of COVID-19 on musicians and creatives has been significant. With live concerts canceled, gigs postponed, and music schools halted, it feels as though our lives have been turned upside down.

We asked three musicians from our community how they have been coping during these challenging times. Robert 'Bubby' Lewis is a charismatic bass player who has performed with notable artists like Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Lupe Fiasco, and Stevie Wonder. Lydia Rhea is a passionate cellist who made her debut at the age of 9 and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance. Lastly, Camellia Akhamie Kies, a graduate of the Navy School of Music, is a military veteran and an incredible drummer.

1. What was the initial impact of COVID-19 on musicians?

Bubby: "COVID-19 has been very out of control. A lot of my work has been canceled. However, I think about others whose lives have been affected in various ways. They are the ones I feel for. Yes, I miss performing, but a person's life is more valuable than me getting up to play bass."

Lydia: "COVID-19 mainly affected my school year when it was declared a pandemic. This happened over my spring break, so instead of returning to school, I went back just to pack up my dorm room and then moved home for the rest of the semester, which was online."

2. How did you see the music industry change and adapt to COVID-19?

Bubby: "I think we’re still trying to figure out ways to evolve music for the current times. It’s been interesting to see the different live stream content emerging. Many countries have found ways to make it engaging. It’s just a matter of time before everyone catches on. We need to learn from each other to make it work."

Lydia: "The number of livestream concerts available for free, as well as subscription services or donation-based events, has skyrocketed. Collaborations between musicians from opposite coasts and even different countries have increased immensely because we now have to seek out collaboration in situations where we cannot play together in person."

Camelia: "The music industry has done a great job encouraging people to practice, create, and continue progressing even from home. The projects and collaborations I have done with musicians from around the world have been really exciting. I was featured in Major Lazer’s 'Lay Your Head on Me' music video, and I am currently working with Red Bull Music on a 60-second music video for social media."

3. Have you been inspired, or has your creativity as a musician been harmed, by COVID-19?

Bubby: "The truth is, with COVID and the ongoing racial issues in the US, it has been somewhat difficult to find inspiration. However, I have had some sparks. I’m working on my new album, inspired by recent events."

Lydia: "For me, it very much depends on the day. I'm exploring repertoire I wouldn't normally learn. With no deadlines or in-person performances, I have more freedom to experiment. It’s challenging to stay musically inspired without live concerts, but I’ve had to get more creative in adapting to new ways of performing and earning as a musician."

Camelia: "I have been inspired on all levels. I am grateful for this time to look within and elevate my goals, purpose, and direction."

Ways to support the music industry and musicians

  • Listen to artists' music more and support them during this time.
  • Keep donating to art organizations! Purchase a subscription to a concert series.
  • Support freelance musicians who are doing more livestream concerts by buying concert tickets.
  • Stay positive and continue sharing love through patience and kindness.
  • If outside and socially-distant, masked concerts are happening, safely attend if you are able.
