Understand every detail.

Overview

The Metronome by Soundbrenner combines a metronome, practice tracker, and tuner in one app.

To learn more about the app and to download it for free, visit the app's product page.

Compatibility

The app is compatible with iPhone models running iOS 16 or later, iPad models running iPadOS 16 or later, and Apple silicon Mac computers running macOS 13 Ventura or later.

On Android, the app is compatible with smartphones and tablets running Android 10 or later.

Using wearables

To learn more about how to use the app with wearables, check out their manuals.

The basics

Accents

Accent markers have four states: Off, 1st accent, 2nd accent, and 3rd accent.

Tap an accent marker in the metronome interface to cycle states. In settings, you can assign different sounds and visual effects to each accent state.

Library

Here you can save songs and organize them into setlists. You can also share them using a convenient sharing link. With Soundbrenner Plus, your library is automatically backed up to the cloud and synced across all your devices.

Ableton Link lets you synchronize the Soundbrenner metronome with Ableton Live and other Link-enabled apps. For example, a band can run the app on multiple phones to share a synchronized audio click, you can sync your Soundbrenner wearable with Ableton Live on a desktop computer, or connect the app to another Link-enabled app on the same device so both share tempo and stay in sync.

Link-enabled apps and devices on the same Wi-Fi network connect automatically and remain in time with each other. Any participant can start or stop independently, change the tempo for everyone, and join or leave a session without disrupting synchronization.

To use Ableton Link, open the Soundbrenner app settings and enable Ableton Link. To sync with another app on the same device, enable Link in both apps. To sync with another device, ensure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network with Ableton Link activated. Synchronization starts automatically, and the Ableton Link settings in the app will display connection indicators.

Rhythm workarounds

Using the metronome slower than 20 BPM

You can simulate slower tempos by muting beats within a measure. Set the tempo to 20 BPM in 4/4. If you mute beats 2 and 4, you will hear a click every two beats, which equals 10 BPM. If you mute beats 2, 3, and 4, you will hear one click per measure, which equals 5 BPM.

Using the metronome faster than 400 BPM

To simulate higher tempos, divide the tempo and use subdivisions. For example, to achieve 450 BPM in quarter notes, set the metronome to 225 BPM and select eighth notes as the subdivision. The resulting clicks equal 450 quarter notes per minute.

Using the metronome with sixtuplets

To approximate sixtuplets, double the BPM and select triplet subdivisions. A sextuplet equals two groups of triplets within one beat, so this produces the correct rhythmic density.

Sending quarter notes to one band member and eighth notes to another

Use two devices linked via Ableton Link over Wi-Fi. Linked devices share the same BPM, but each device can choose its own subdivision.

Using quarter notes per minute instead of beats per minute

The app displays tempo in BPM, where the beat is defined by the selected time signature. Changing the time signature does not automatically change the BPM.

If you prefer to think in quarter notes per minute, adjust the BPM manually. For time signatures with x/8, double the BPM to maintain the same quarter-note pulse. For time signatures with x/2, halve the BPM accordingly.

Outside of Ableton Link we discontinued the DAW sync beta due to usability and reliability issues. Setup was often complex and time-consuming, and the wide range of DAWs, operating systems, and device combinations made it difficult to ensure a stable experience.

Our current focus is on introducing tempo changes in the app and continuing to make the metronome as powerful and reliable as possible.
