Soundbrenner Plus update: New videos on Soundbrenner Learn and our top viewed videos

Jules, in Music insights
Mar 15, 2021 | 3 min read

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been busy adding new educational content to Soundbrenner Learn in our app (along with some free videos available on YouTube – we got you, Android users!). Check out what’s new below:

New Videos:

Grooves of Afro-Cuban Music

Our instructor Floro breaks down the tumbao, the most fundamental rhythm in Afro-Cuban music. He puts it together with the clave.

Polyrhythms

Polyrhythms can be intimidating – but, they’re great for spicing up your music.  Watch this video to get a simple breakdown of what they are and how to apply them!

Odd Meters

Do odd meters just sound odd to you? Learn how you can organize these beats so you can feel more at home with them.

Playing late, or pushing the beat?

Lining up perfectly with the metronome is the first step to making sure we play in time – but what next? Jerold talks about playing in front and behind the beat. Once you’re feeling solid with a click, you can practice playing ahead or behind for some different time-feels.

Reasons to practice slowly (feat. tai chi)

Do you want to eliminate hesitation, indecision and confusion? Nate explains why slow practice is the only way to develop certain aspects of your music-making. Sounds paradoxical, but slower practice means faster progress.

Grooves of Funk

Yet another rhythmic and danceable form of music is Funk. We may all know Earth, Wind and Fire or Prince but Funk is a lot more complex than just being music that evolved in the 70s. It involves a lot of rhythmic counterplaying and syncopation yet somehow it still manages to arrive at a single head-bobbing groove.

Practice only: Drills for 16th note subdivision (intermediate)

Once you know the drill, literally, from our videos where we teach it to you, you can go straight to our “practice only” videos. We cut all the talking, so it’s just a practice-along exercise, designed for you to revisit often. It’s also an extended version, so you can really settle into your practice. (We have drills for eighth notes and triplets too.)

Drills for 16th note subdivision (instrumental demo)

Our rhythm drills just require a set of free hands, so you can clap along and get a good, solid understanding of the rhythm (and you can do them anywhere). In our instrumental demo videos, Nate explains how you can apply these exercises to your instrument.

Biggest misconception in music learning

Jerold explains a common misconception among his students as they expand their musical horizons. Make sure you don’t fall into this trap!
